The 2025 season of the Teatro Lirico Sperimentale of Spoleto will open with Nanof, l’altro, a one-act opera in six scenes for 6 voices, ensemble of 18 instruments and chamber choir by Antonio Agostini, on a libretto by Chiara Serani and Antonio Agostini, with the collaboration of Davide Toschi.
The musical ensemble will be conducted by Mimma Campanale, directed by Alessio Pizzech, sets by Andrea Stanisci and costumes by Clelia De Angelis.
«The work centers on the historical figure of Oreste Nannetti, a scientist who was incarcerated in the Volterra asylum (the time of the action is before the Basaglia Law came into effect), where he managed to find a way to sublimate his condition as a sectioned patient by engraving a series of marks on the great wall of that asylum with his belt buckle: the “different” Nanof – as he named himself – in fact the inventor of an evocative new vocabulary (portions of this wall can still be seen today at the Volterra Museum) that continues to attract the attention of language and linguistics scholars,” so Enrico Girardi, Artistic Director of the Sperimentale.
Composed on commission by the Teatro Lirico Sperimentale, the opera will be premiered at the Teatro Caio Melisso in Spoleto on Friday, Aug. 8 at 8:30 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 9 at 8:30 p.m. and Sunday, Aug. 10 at 5 p.m. (preview: Thursday, Aug. 7 at 8:30 p.m.).
