Monteverdi, “L’Orfeo” (concert form) | San Biagio Temple (Montepulciano)

Between 1479 and 1480 the poet Agnolo Poliziano (1454-1494) wrote the play La Fabula di Orfeo; this composition was taken up over a century later by Claudio Monteverdi to compose L’Orfeo, now recognized as the first masterpiece in the history of melodrama.
On Saturday, Sept. 16, in the Renaissance setting of the Temple of San Biagio, L’Orfeo by Monteverdi will be performed in concert form in order to celebrate the figure of Poliziano, a native of Montepulciano. In fact, this event is part of the three-year celebration of the poet, whose 570th anniversary of his birth and 530th anniversary of his death will fall in 2024.
Protagonist of L’Orfeo will be the Etruria Barocca Ensemble led by Dimitri Betti, concertmaster, with the participation of the Gruppo Chiarine del Magistrato delle Contrade di Montepulciano.
The event, organized by Fondazione Cantiere Internazionale d’Arte di Montepulciano, for an initiative by the Municipality of Montepulciano, as well as the Municipal Library and Historical Archives “Piero Calamandrei” Montepulciano.
